Advantages and disadvantages of timing belt

Aug 16, 2018

The transmission components of the timing system are divided into two types: timing chain and timing belt. Many people care about which transmission form is better.

Timing belts have been used in engines for a long time, with mature technology, low cost and low noise, but they need regular inspection and maintenance. Generally, they need to be replaced within 50,000 to 100,000 km. The timing chain has the advantages of compact structure, high transmission power, high reliability and wear resistance, and lifetime maintenance-free, but the noise is generally slightly larger than that of the conventional timing belt.

But nothing is absolute. With the advancement of technology, some cars use a toothed silent chain, which is even lower than the timing belt. It is believed that the widespread use of this timing chain will bring more convenience to the majority of automotive users.

Toothed silent chain

Common timing chains are mainly divided into two types: sleeve roller chains and toothed chains. Among them, the roller chain is affected by its innate structure, the rotation noise will be more obvious with respect to the timing, and the transmission resistance and inertia will be correspondingly larger.

We commonly call the "silent chain" with a toothed structure design, the gears are softer, the impact is smaller, the operation is more stable, and there is no chain roller structure that produces noise, so the noise level is expressed. It is better than the traditional timing belt
